CAGC History

The Central Arkansas Gun Club has its roots in the old Pulaski County Rifle Club.  When CAGC incorporated with the state, the charter of the Pulaski County Rifle Club was used by CAGC.  The older club had been idle for some time. It was active the 1930s under the leadership of WWII Silver Star recipient Colonel Flavian Fiske.  The first Known-Distance rifle range was located just west of New York Avenue and the pits were located in the far western end of what is now Engineers' Lake.  The remains of these pits can still be seen when the Lake is drained.  The 600 yard firing line was on top of the rise just to the northwest of the swimming pool.  The Pulaski Club was an active club with large High power Rifle Teams being sent to Camp Perry each year during the 1930s.  The club became inactive with the beginning of WWII.  There has always been a long association between CAGC and the Arkansas National Guard, with several club members having fired on both Ark. Civilian teams and Ark NG teams at Camp Perry.  It should be noted that Arkansas State Civilian Team sat Camp Perry weren't officially sponsored by the Pulaski County Rifle Club or Central Arkansas Gun Club, but by the Arkansas State Rifle and Pistol Association.  The Central Arkansas Gun Club incorporated in 1961 with Clint Cusick, an Army Reserve High power Rifle Competitor as the moving force and first president.  Clint later became Distinguished and was an active member well into the 1990s, serving as Range Officer at many of our State Championship Matches.  Malcolm "Mick" Ruthven, a highly decorated WWII Infantry veteran was an active CAGC member and on his passing, the rifle range which we use was named in his honor in a ceremony presented by the Arkansas National Guard. CAGC has hosted High power Rifle matches at Camp Robinson continuously since it was created. In the mid-1980s the National Guard Marksmanship Training Unit was moved from Nashville, Tennessee to Came Robinson.  During that period CAGC hosted several Inter Service Conventional Pistol Matches.
